Walking home safely at night
Walking home at night is usually safe. A few simple habits make it even safer and help you act quickly if something feels wrong.
Before you leave
- Plan your route. Choose lit streets with people around, even if the walk is longer.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be home.
- Charge your phone and keep it easy to reach.
- Turn on listening in SayNear, so that you can raise the alarm with your safety phrase.
On the way
- Stay alert. Keep the volume low or take one earbud out, and look up from the screen.
- Walk with friends if you can, or share a taxi.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, cross the street, change your route or go into a shop.
If you think you are being followed
Go to a place with people and light, such as a shop or a restaurant. Call 112 if you feel threatened. Do not go home if you think someone is following you.
If something happens
Get away, shout and call 112. Say your safety phrase or press the panic button, so that bears nearby get an alarm. SayNear does not replace 112.
